During my spring semester sophomore year of college, I spent an hour every day in a 1st grade classroom observing math. I spent majority of the placement observing the classroom set up, the teacher and how she teaches, the student's behavior, management of the classroom, etc. That being said, I was privilege enough of to teach two small group lessons. One small group lesson focused on identifying coins, their values, and how to add them together. The second small group lesson focused on how to add two-digit numbers using base ten blocks and the student's ability to verbalize their thinking. Through this experience, I learned the importance of teaching students that everyone is a math person. There were many moments where students get discouraged quickly or would express that they couldn't do it. During these moments, I would remind students that mistakes mean that our brains are growing, and we are learning. That making mistakes are not a reflection of themselves as students but rather it is just showing students that there is room for improvement.
