In a first-grade field placement, I had the opportunity to work one on one with students to develop their understanding of coins and being able to identify coins based on their size and color. I used the PA Economic Standard 6.2.1.D – “Explain the role of money in determining price, and the Number and Operations Standard CC.2. 1.1.B.2- "Use place value concepts and properties of operations to add and subtract within 100". Using these standards as the foundation for my lesson, I begin to work on their understanding of coins by introducing the game "Coin War". I started the lesson by pulling two students over to my desk and setting various coins in front of them. As I laid the coins in front of them, I asked them to tell me the name and their value. This was my way of getting an idea of what the students already knew and confronting any possible misconceptions before they had a chance to reveal themselves. Once I felt like I had a clear understanding of how familiar they were with coins, we began the game. The cards were split evenly between the two students with faces down. Each student would pull the top card of their deck and flip it over, so the face of the card was visible. Each face of the card has various coins, and the students were to add the coins on the card to get the final amount represented. Then the students would compare their cards to see whose card had the higher amount, and the student with the highest amount would keep their card and their opponents. As the students were playing the game, I had each type of coin represented for the students to look at, expo markers and white boards so they could write out their work. Throughout the lesson, I had students identify the coin and explain their thinking process for me.
